Overnutrition
inpout of calories over body requirements. Obesity, sleep disorders, diabeties, shortened life expectancy. Emotional factors, sedatary lifestyle, culture ethnic, genetics
Vegetarian risk
vitamin, mineral, or protein deficiencies unless their diets are well planned.

form of malnutrition where too much fluid in the body’s tissues, which causes swelling under the skin. ). adequate energy intake
Starvation-related malnutrition
your body uses what it needs. Carohydrates and glycogen and doesn’t use fat and protein. Once carbs are depleted, proteins are converted to NRG and in 5-9 days body fat is mobalised to give NRG. About 46 weeks before fat stores are depleted.
Female athlete triad:
eating disorders,
amenorrhea (no menstration)
osteoporosis
Anorexia nervosa
Serious often chronic, life threatening
Self imposed weight loss,
Endocrine dysfunction
Distorted psychopathological attitude toward weight and eating
Requires nutritional support
The underlying psychiatric problem must be identified and addressed
Abnormal weight loss, deliberate self-starvation, intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat
Lanugo, refusal to eat, continuous dieting, hair loss,
Sensitivity to cold, compulsive exercising, absent or irregular menstruation
Dry skin, constipation
Bulimia Nervosa
Frequent binge eating, self induced vomiting
Loss of control over eating
Persistent concern with body image
Individuals may have a normal BMI
Weight fluctuations with bingeing and purging
- Signs of vomiting – macerated knuckles, swollen salivary glands, broken vessels in the eyes, dental problems (rotting teeth)
Fluoxetine
the only approved antidepressant for treating Bulimia in Canada.
Oral nutrition
- High-calorie oral supplements may be used in the client whose nutritional intake is deficient.
- These supplements should not be used as meal substitutes but between meals as snacks.
- People who have these drinks at meal time feel filled up and won’t have their meals since their already “full”
Enteral nutrition (EN)
- Nutrition (e.g., a nutritionally balanced liquefied food or formula) provided through the GI tract via a tube, catheter, or stoma that delivers nutrients distal to the oral cavity
- May be ordered for the client who has a functioning GI tract but is unable to take any or enough oral nourishment
- Enteral feeding is cheaper than parental feeding also easier and safer
Parenteral nutrition
adminsisted through blood stream. Used when GI tract can’t due to ingestion, digestion or absorption of essential nutirents is a problem.
Prepared based on lab work results.
