Q

FLAT PIG

A

Anterior Pituitary hormones

FSH - Follicle-Stimulating Hormone
LH - Leuteinizing Hormone
ACTH - Adrenocorticotropic Hormone
TSH - Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
Prolactin - stimulates milk in female mammary glandsIgnore

Posterior Pituitary

A

Secretes ADH and oxytocin

produced in hypothalamus then go to posterior pituitary for storage

A

master gland because it controls the function of most other endocrine glands

Q

Acromegaly

A
  • characterized by an overproduction of GH
  • (overfuncitoning) overgrowth of bones and soft tissues.
  • Bones thicker/fatter but not longer.
  • Can also have heart enlargement, hypertension and DM.
  • We want to decrease growth hormone by radiationg or meds. Sometimes need to take out pituitary (can go through the nose for that)

Q

Hypopituitarism

A
  • any decrease in 1 or more of pituitary hormones

* most common hormone deficiencies involve GH and gonadotropins (i.e., LH, FSH).

Q

ACTH deficiency

A

can lead to acute adrenal insufficiency and hypovolemic shock from sodium and water depletion.

Q

Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH)

A
  • is the release of ADH despite normal or low plasma osmolarity.
  • abnormal production of ADH, fluid retention, concentrated urine. Look to do in and outs, fluid restriction, daily weights
  • hyponatremia results from an excess of water rather than a deficiency of sodium
  • Increased ADH –> Increased water reabsorption in renal tubules –>Increased intravascular fluid volume –>Dilutional hyponatremia and decreased serum osmolality

Q

Diabetes insipidus

A
  • a deficiency in production or secretion of ADH or a decreased renal response to ADH.
  • Increased thirst (polydipsia) and polyuria.
  • Sever dehydration and hypovolemic shock happen bc Urine output is so great that person can’t keep up with liquid intake.
