Surveillance is
systematic observation of aerospace, cyberspace, surface, or subsurface areas, places, persons, or things, by visual, aural, electronic, photographic, or other means.
Reconnaissance is
mission undertaken to obtain, by visual observation or other detection methods, information about activities and resources of an enemy or adversary, or to secure data concerning the meteorological, hydrographic, or geographic characteristics of a particular area.

is your reason for being where you are and doing what you are doing (individual responsibility).
Cover for action
is the reason for taking a certain action at any given time.
Cover within a cover
is for use when you are compromised, and your cover is blown or not longer practical.
Pick-Up
is the initial acquisition, identification of the target.
Elements of a Pick-Up
- Locate Target
- Trigger
- Box cardinal directions
- Anchor
- Communication
Trigger
is responsible for covering an entrance, vehicle, or chokepoint that the target is expected to r return or pass-through during stops.
Trigger (responsibilities)
- Alerts the team
- Note and transmits description
- Transmit targets action
- Transmits mode and direction of travel
The box is established
directly after the target comes to a stop during the course of follow to initiate control of the target.
Types of formations
A-B-C Cascade Leading Picket (used if target is surveillance conscience) Zone
The Eye
is the control Element. Only one element needs to have actual “Eyes on the target”
Fresh green or red
means the light just turned.
A stale light
is not knowing how much time the light will be the same.
Backing Element
is the next vehicle or individual in sequence
Other Team Members
have the flexibility to maneuver as they deem best to support the team, unless otherwise stated by the team leader
Don’t pass control vehicle and avoid passing backing vehicle
Lost Contact drill
- Stay Calm
- Notify team members
- Expand outward from last contact
- Begin systematic search
- Cover all possible areas
- Communicate with team
Lost Contact Methods
- Dragnet is movement down parallel streets
- Imploding Bubble is all move in towards last sighted position
- Starburst or shotgun is all move out from last sighted position
Individual Duties in vehicle
- Driver has visual contact and drives
- Navigator is responsible for map reading, relaying location information to other team vehicles (making the calls)
- The “EYE” anticipates traffic, patterns, and flow.
