Where was the first SOD/GRD operation conducted?
The Rio Grande Valley with two GRD teams and the US. Border Patrol. The operations resulted in the arrest of 3 smugglers, 169 pounds of marijuana and one .357 Magnum pistol
What is GRD authorized strength?
30 (currently 12 fulltime and 12 contingent).
How many observations have been conducted since 1989?
1000 observations. GRD is known as being observation experts and it is our termination to continually improve.
What is GRDs Mission Statement?
Primary Mission: is to conduct low visibility reconnaissance in support of federal, state, and local LEA’s counter narcotics investigations. GRD also provides training to LEAs in the military unique capabilities and skills to improve drug interdiction and drug demand reduction activities.
Secondary Mission: Provides training support to LEAs in military subjects and skills in order to support law enforcement drug interdiction operations.

What is Image Projection?
The steps the GRD operator takes to make himself “invisible” while conducting operations in an urban environment
- Appearance should fit with the area (50%) rule
- Clothing should not call attention to operator. i.e.:
a. Military Civilian logos
b. clothing should not draw attention - GRD operators are not permitted to invent “explanations”
