Steeplechase: Integument Flashcards
What are the two types of epithelium tissue?
Surface and Glandular
How is Glandular tissue formed?
Proliferation of surface epithelium into underlying connective tissue
What is the function of simple squamous?
Diffusion and filtration
What is the function of stratified squamous
Protection
What is the function of cuboidal?
Secretion and absorption
What is connective tissue made up of?
Protein fibres (collagen and elastic) and ground substance
What is ground substance made up of?
Gel like material, made up of glycosaminoglycans (that link up to even begin proteoglycans)
What are some properties of glycosaminoglycans?
Hydrophilic, Inflexible good at resisting compressive forces
Why is the granulosum layer the most densely staining?
because it contains keratohyalin granules
Where are merkel cells found?
In the stratum Basale, they are clear staining- can have growth factors for free nerve endings
What are the two types of dermis?
Papillary and reticular
What kind of feathers may have a vascular dermis?
Blood feathers
What is horn made out of?
Highly keratinised epidermis
What is the dermis in cat claws?
The ‘quick’
What is the white line made out of?
Interlamellar horn and terminal papillae, it marks the end point of the sole and beginning of hoof wall
