GI Tract- Exotics Flashcards
What are the 5 different categories of fish?
Lampreys, Elasmobranchs, Ray-Finned Fish, Lobe-Finned fish, Lungfish
4 Different types of oesophagus
Y-shaped, U-shaped, Straight and Absent
Pyloric Sphincter
separates stomach from intestines
Pyloric caeca
present in some species, thought to secrete digestive enzymes
Snake adaptions for teeth and heart
Have backward teeth in order to aid swallowing and can move their heart so it doesn’t become compressed in the stomach
GIT in snakes
simple and short, so they require a high quality diet, oesophagus folds to allow for stretch
Intestine in snakes
contains small coils enclosed by a mesentery
Stomachs in crocodilians
made up of 2 parts, 1 muscular the second is glandular
Why must tortoises be starved before hibernation?
So the food in their body doesn’t ferment and give them sepsis
Teeth in lizards
vary depending on diet either pleurodont or acrodont
Testudines
have a keratinised beak instead of teeth, small caecum and undergo hindgut fermentation
Herbst Corpuscles
vibration sensitive mechanoreceptors often found in waterfowl
Crop
Muscular pouch located on the front of a birds neck, serves as a storage place for food
Crop Milk
A secretion made from the lining of the crop (sloughed epithelial cells) that is regurgitated to young birds
Proventriculus
glandular part of a birds stomach, may store food or commence digestion before travelling to the gizzard
Why do snakes require a high quality diet?
They have a very short GIT
What is a cloaca?
an opening for the digestive, reproductive and urinary tracts
Where does the swim bladder sit?
Between the vertebral column and the stomach
Proventriculus meaning?
Glandular stomach
Ventriculus meaning?
Muscular stomach
How often are caecal contents voided?
Once every 10 defecations
Myomorpha (mouse-like)
brachydont, anelodont, radicular
(short crown, not continuously growing,
closed root)
Sciuromorpha (squirrel-like)
brachydont, anelodont, radicular
(short crown, not continuously growing,
closed root)
Caviomorpha
hypsodont, elodont, aradicular
(tall crown, continuously growing, open root)
Which animal does not have a gall bladder?
Rats
How do lizards use their tongues to sense?
They stick it into the vomeronasal organ which is used for sense
What is a gizzard?
Stomach found in birds, mechanically digests food
What is the proventriculus?
Glandular stomach found in birds, enzymatic digestion- food can travel back and forth between the two stomachs
