Salivary glands (the oral cavity) Flashcards
What are four functions of the salivary glands?
Lubrication and binding, Antibacterial and Enzyme digestion, pH regulation and providing urea for protein synthesis
What are major salivary glands?
Via long ducts, Parotid, Mandibular and sublingual salivary gland
Parotid glands
Largest of the salivary glands, aid in saliva secretion and chewing food
What are the minor salivary glands?
Via short ducts, labial lingual and buccal
What are salivary glands made up from?
secretory acini and ducts
What are the several different types of acinar cells
serous, mucous, seromucous and myoepithelial
What does serous acinus secrete?
proteins in an isotonic watery fluid
What does a mucous acinus secrete?
lubricant
What are salivary glands composed of?
lobules of exocrine tubuloacinar glands that secrete into a duct
What are the intercalated ducts lined by?
simple cuboidal epithelium
what are MEC?
unique population of epithelial cells with contractile properties, similar to smooth muscle cells
What vascularises the parotid gland?
branches of maxillary artery and vein
What innervates the parotid gland?
The glossopharyngeal nerve
What is the parotid gland composed of?
numerous lobules, separated by connective tissue
What vascularises the mandibular gland?
branches of linguofacial artery and vein
