16
Q

Is HPV transient?

A

Yes, the virus usually clears spontaneously over 1-2 years

Can persist even when warts are not present

Removing warts does not help clear or treat the virus

17
Q

HPV Manifestations and Complications

A

Most people do not know they are infected

Warts are generally discrete, white to grey, flesh colored.

Warts can be confused with other STI lesions, so rule out other conditions first

Few long term concerns, however, HPV strains highly linked with cancer so can need more screenings

18
Q

Genital Warts and HPV Treatment

A

HPV vaccines
-Cover 90% of genital warts and 70-80% of strains that cause cervical cancer

-Chemical or ablative methods

-Petroleum jelly on recently removed sites

-Patients applied treatments also available

-Removing warts is no thought to decrease spread

-Anal warts are more difficult to treat

19
Q

Goal of treating HPV and Genital Warts

A

Remove symptomatic warts
