STD's Viral (Exam 2) Flashcards
Genital Herpes Strains
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2)
BOTH TYPES cause anogential infections
Genital Herpes
Life long and incurable
HSV-1 more commonly cause _____ ______ and HSV-2 more commonly cause _______ ______
Oral Lesions
Anogenital Lesions
Genital Herpes is usually spread by
someone who is unaware they are infected
Genital Herpes Patho
Virus enters through mucous membranes or breaks in the skin after contact with an infected person
Can be dormant
-Viral reactivation occurs when virus descends to initial site of infection or other mucous membranes / skin
HSV establishes permanent presence in DORSAL ROOT GANGLIA
VIRUS IN THEIR FOR LIFE
When is genital herpes most contagious
When person a is symptomatic but can be spreading when asymptomatic (A-Symp Viral Shedding)
HSV-1 is primarly associated with
oral lesion and cold sores
Genital Herpes: Episodes
Primary Episode:
-Incubation 2-12 days
-Genital = no symptoms
-Mouth = Sores
-Flu like symptoms
-3 WEEKS
Recurrent Episode:
-Occurs within first year after primary episode
-Lesions appear
With HSV do episodes increase or decrease overtime?
Decrease
What can trigger an episode of genital herpes
Stress
Fatigue
Acute illness
Sunburn
Immunosuppression
Genital Herpes: Complications
Neurological -Blindness - encephalitis - aseptic meningitis
Increase risk of HIV transmission
Pregnant women can transmit virus to baby
Genital herpes diagnosis
Culture from active lesion can distinguish 1 from 2
Genital Herpes: Treatment
Acyclovir – can shorten duration of outbreak and be propholactic
can suppress outbreaks and keep lesions clean and dry
Genital Warts and HPV
Benign growths (not cancer) on anogenital skin or mucosa caused by sexual transmitted HPV
HPV incubation
Months to Years
Is HPV transient?
Yes, the virus usually clears spontaneously over 1-2 years
Can persist even when warts are not present
Removing warts does not help clear or treat the virus
HPV Manifestations and Complications
Most people do not know they are infected
Warts are generally discrete, white to grey, flesh colored.
Warts can be confused with other STI lesions, so rule out other conditions first
Few long term concerns, however, HPV strains highly linked with cancer so can need more screenings
Genital Warts and HPV Treatment
HPV vaccines
-Cover 90% of genital warts and 70-80% of strains that cause cervical cancer
-Chemical or ablative methods
-Petroleum jelly on recently removed sites
-Patients applied treatments also available
-Removing warts is no thought to decrease spread
-Anal warts are more difficult to treat
Goal of treating HPV and Genital Warts
Remove symptomatic warts
