-Peripheral Vascular Disease (arterial insufficiency)
-Trauma
-Thermal injuries

Types of Amputations
Open (Guillotine)
vs
Closed
Elective
vs
Traumatic
Who are Open (Guillotine) Amputations for?
Someone with an infected area that they do not want to close
Needs to be aseptic before approximation
Complication of Amputations
Hemorrhage
-Tachy
-Dressing (glove underneath limb)
Infection
Phantom limb pain
-Pain in limb that is gone
-Mirror therapy
Flexion contractures / Especially at hip
-Common with AKA
Amputation: Post-op care
Assess tissue perfusion
ATC Pain Management
Prevent infection
Promote proper position / ambulation / exercise
Post Op Positioning Order from Provider
Prone position 30 min 4x per day
(Forced to extend the hip)
ROM exercise
Amputation: Initial Post-Op
Compression bandage (foster shaping and molding of limb)
Wear AAT except with PT or bathing
