Stability and Load Factor Quiz Flashcards
What determines the longitudinal stability of an airplane?
The location of the CG with respect to the center of lift.
Changes in the center of pressure of a wing affect the aircrafts -
aerodynamic balance and controllability.
The amount of excess load that can be imposed on the wing of an airplane depends upon
speed of the airplane
An airplane has been loaded in such a manner that the CG is located aft of the aft CG limit. One undesirable flight characteristic a pilot might experience with this airplane would be -
difficulty in recovering from a stalled condition.
Loading an airplane to the most aft CG will cause the airplane to be
less stable at all speeds
During an approach to a stall, an increased load factor will cause the airplane to
stall at a higher airspeed
Wingtip vortices are created only when an aircraft is
developing lift
The greatest vortex strength occurs when the generating aircraft is
heavy, clean, and slow.
The wind condition that requires maximum caution when avoiding wake turbulence on landing is a
light, quartering wind
When departing behind a heavy aircraft, the pilot should avoid wake turbulence by maneuvering the aircraft
above and upwind from the heavy aircraft.
What are the two types of stability?
Static and Dynamic
What are the three sub-types of static stability?
Positive, Neutral, Negative
Which type of static stability must one have in order to have any dynamic stability?
Positive Static Stability
Describe positive dynamic stability.
Over time, the motion of the displaced object decreases in amplitude and, because it is positive, the object displaced returns toward the equilibrium state
What is a wing dihedral?
The wing tip is higher than the wing root.
How does dihedral increase roll stability?
the lower wing has a higher AOA.
How does dihedral increase roll stability?
Air that is trapped between the wing and the landing surface. It reduces induced drag.
What effect does ground effect have on landing round out and flare?
Ground effect may make the aircraft float down the runway and fly at a slower airspeed compared to cruise
When is an aircraft producing wing tip vortices?
Wing tip vortices are produced when the wing is creating lift
What are the conditions that would create the largest wake turbulence?
The conditions are heavy, clean, and slow
What is the procedure for avoiding wake turbulence from a large aircraft departing before you?
We need to rotate prior to the point at which the preceding aircraft rotated when taking off behind another aircraft, continue to climb and stay above their flight path, or wait 2-3 minutes
What is a load factor?
Load factor is a ratio of the total load supported by the wings to the actual weight of the aircraft and its contents. Load factor is expressed in “Gs.”
