Q

What is inversion?

A

An abrupt change from climb to straight-and-level flight can create a feeling of tumbling backwards

6
Q

What is Coriolis?

A

after being in a turn for a while (enough for the fluid in the ears to resettle), the movement of the head in a different plane (while still in the turn) creates the illusion of turning or accelerating on an entirely different axis

Q

What is Elevator?

A

An abrupt vertical acceleration (like in an updraft) can create the feeling of being in a climb

Q

What is false horizon?

A

Any sort of sloping cloud formation, an obscured horizon, a dark scene spread with ground lights and stars, and certain geometric patterns of ground lights can distract the pilot from aligning with the actual horizon

Q

What is the Leans?

A

a sudden return to level flights following a gradual and prolonged turn that went unnoticed by the pilot

10
Q

What is Autokinesis?

A

When flying in the dark, a stationary light may appear to move if it is stared at for a prolonged amount of time. A pilot may attempt to align the aircraft with this moving light causing a loss of aircraft control

Q

What is a graveyard spin?

A

During recovery from a spin after the ear fluid has set, the pilot may feel they are now spinning in the opposite direction. Trying to recover from this new “spin” motion, they inadvertently go back into the direction of the original spin but never actually have recovered from the spin.

12
Q

What is a graveyard spiral?

A

Similar to a graveyard spin, a prolonged, coordinated, constant rate turn may create the illusion of not turning. While recovering to level flight, the pilot will then experience the sensation of turning in the opposite direction. This then causes the pilot to return the aircraft to the original turn

15
Q

What is hypoxia?

A

Hypoxia is an oxygen deficiency to the brain that may cause lack of clear thinking.

16
Q

What is carbon monoxide poisoning?

A

Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs from having carbon monoxide attach to the hemoglobin in the red blood cells instead of oxygen, resulting in a form of hypoxia

17
Q

What is hyperventilation?

A

Hyperventilation is the excessive rate and depth of respiration leading to abnormal loss of carbon dioxide from the blood.

18
Q

How long does it take the body to rid itself of the alcohol in one drink?

A

3 hours

19
Q

What is stress?

A

Stress is the body’s response to physical and psychological demands placed upon it.

20
Q

What is fatigue?

A

Fatigue can occur from physical factors (sleep loss, exercise, or physical work) or mental factors (stress or prolonged performance of cognitive work) that degrade the attention and concentration, impair coordination, and decrease our ability to communicate

21
Q

What is the difference between acute and chronic fatigue?

A

Acute is normal and short term, normally from food and sleep.
Chronic is long term and normally has psychological roots or disease.

22
Q

What is dehydration?

A

Dehydration describes critical loss of water from the body. The first noticeable effect of dehydration is fatigue

23
Q

What are symptoms of hypoxia?

A

Increased breathing rate, Headache, lightheadedness, Dizziness, poor coordination

24
Q

What are symptoms of hyperventilation?

A

Shortness of breath with rapid breathing.

25
Q

What are symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning?

A

Headache, Fatigue, Confusion
