Open skills
Skills where the situation is constantly changing (different every time)
Closed skills
Take place in a stable predictable environment, and the player knows exactly what to do and when (penalty)
Basic skillsis
Is one that a player finds easy and needs little concentration to do. All players can do it
Complex skill
Needs the players complete attention and concentration as it is technically difficult to perform. These skills require a lot of practice
Low Organisation skills
Has clear simple phases (side-foot pass)
High Organisation skills
Has a lot of complicated phases (freekick routine)
Massed Practice
The skill is practiced until it is learned, without taking a break - normally for fit and experienced athletes
Distributed Practice
The skill is practised over several sessions or with rest breaks - normally for lower ability, experience or fitness level athletes
What are the main methods a coach will use?
- Visual guidance
- Verbal guidance
- Manual guidance
- Mechanical guidance
Visual Guidance
- Show the learner what to do. Demonstration by coach or other learner
- Watching videos on professionals. Ask midfielders to watch KDB
- Photograph or poster of what the coach wants you to do.
Verbal guidance
- Can be helpful as long as it is clear
- For more experienced/skilled athletes
- Sometimes used before a demonstration. Often during a visual demonstration
Manual and Mechanical
- When the coach is actually in contact with the performer
- Manual = coach
- Mechanical = equipment
- Correct body position
Intrinsic feedback
- Comes from the performer themselves
- A novice will have little knowledge on why they did poorly in a match. Can be negative without any extrinsic feedback
Extrinsic feedback
- Comes from an outside source (often coach)
- Helps motivate if positive feedback
