Movement In Joints Flashcards
- What is Flexion?
- What joints provide it?
- Sporting example
- Bending movement that decrease the angle between body parts
- Shoulder, hip and elbow
- Bicep Curl
- What is Extension?
- What joints provide it?
- Sporting example
- Straightening movement that increase the angle between body parts
- Shoulder and hip
- Follow through after striking the ball in football
- What is Abduction?
- What joints provide it?
- Sporting example
- Movement that pulls towards the midline of the body
- Shoulder and hip
- A golfer on the tee swings the club to the ball
What is a joint?
- A joint is a place where two or more bones meet
- Joints are important for movement and rotation
What types of joints are there?
- Hinge joint
- Ball and Socket joint
- Pivot joint
- Condyloid joint
What movements occur at a pivot joint?
- Pivot joints allow bones to rotate
- In a pivot joint one joint is shaped like a cylinder rotates inside another bone or ligament making a ring around it
Where do you find pivot joints?
- Neck
- Wrist
When in sport would you use a pivot joint?
Heading a ball in football (neck)
What is a hinge joint?
A joint that only allows back and forward movement (just like a door)
Examples of a hinge joint?
- Knee
- Elbow
What movements occur at hinge joints?
- Flexion
- Extension
- Dorsi-flexion
- Plantar-flexion
Hinge joint in sport?
When striking a football, you bring your leg backwards (flexion) by the hinge joint, to followthrough forward (extension)
What is a ball and socket joint?
When the rounded head of a long bone (the ball) fits into a cup-shaped hole (the socket)
Examples of ball and socket joints?
- Hip
- Shoulder
Sporting example of ball and socket joint?
A cricketer would use their ball and socket joint in their shoulder to perform a straight arm bowl. Ball and socket joints allow the most range of movement
