Lever System Flashcards
What is a lever system
A rigid structure, such as a bar or bone, that rotates around an axis
Fulcrum
The point around which the lever rotates
Load
The force that is applied by the lever system. The load is the object you want to move a dumb bell with your arms
What are the three different classes of levers
First Class
Second Class
Third Class
What first class levers
Levers that have the fulcrum central
What is a second class lever?
Lever that has the load central
What is a third class lever
Lever that has the effort central
What movement in the body is a first class lever
Heading the ball
The fulcrum is between the skull and first vertebrae with load being the ball and the effort coming from the neck muscles
What movement in the body is a second class lever?
Calf raise
The fulcrum is at the toes with the load of your body weight sitting between your toes and heels and the gastrocnemius providing the effort
Effort
A force that is applied by the user of the lever system. The effort is supplied by your muscles
Mechanical Advantage
Allows a load to be moved with relatively small effort
