Special Senses Mod 8 Flashcards
What are the 2 classifications of sense organs?
General and specialized
Define general sense organs
Individual cells or receptor units
Concentrated in the skin
Define specialized sense organs
Large and complex organs that are in groups of specialized receptors
What are the common characteristics in all sense organs?
Able to detect a stimulus
Stimulus gets changes into a nerve impulse
Signal travels to the brain to be interpreted
What are free (naked) nerve endings?
Found in almost every part of the body, mostly concentrated in the skin and can sense pain, temperature, itch and tickle
What are the 6 encapsulated nerve endings and was do they feel?
- Tactile corpuscles: light touch, low vibration
- Ruffini corpuscles: repetitive touch or pressure
- Pacini corpuscles: deep pressure and high frequency
- Krause corpuscles: touch
- Golgi tendon organs: receptors in muscle ex. the pain of a pulled muscle
- Muscle spindles: muscle length
What are the 3 layers of the eyeball?
- Sclera
- Choroid
- Retina
What is the function of the sclera?
Tough outer coat
It’s the white part of the eye
Contains the cornea which is transparent and is over the iris
What is the function of the choroid?
The vascular layer that prevents light from scattering
Contracts the iris muscle so it can dilate it’s constrict the pupil
What is the function of the retina?
Inner most layer of the eye
Has rods for night vision
Has cones for day vision and colour vision
Define the lens in the eye
Transparent body behind the pupil and focuses light rays on the retina
What kind of fluid is in the eye and what is the purpose?
Fluid in the eye helps maintain shape and helps reflect light
Has aqueous humor which is watery fluid in front of the lens
Has vitreous humor that is a jelly like fluid that sits behind the lens
What is the conjunctiva?
A mucous membrane that covers the surface of the sclera and is kept moist from tears in the tear duct
What are the 3 divisions of the ear?
- External ear
- Middle ear
- Inner ear
What are the 2 parts of the external ear?
- Auricle (pinna) = earlobe
2. External auditory canal
