The Nervous Systen Mod 7 Flashcards
What are the 2 main divisions of the nervous system? And what do they contain?
- The central nervous system: brain and spinal cord
2. Peripheral nervous system: nerves that go out from the central nervous system
What further divides the peripheral nervous system into 2 categories?
- Autonomic nervous system: regulates the bodies involuntary processes
- Somatic nervous system: regulates the bodies voluntary control
What are the 2 divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic: fight or flight response involuntary
Parasympathetic: rest and digest sympathizes stress
What are the 3 parts of a neutron?
Dendrites, axon and cell body
What are the 3 types of neutrons and what are their functions?
- Sensory (afferent) receives impulse and sends to the brain ex. touching something cold
- Motor (efferent) causes an action (effect) ex. moving your hand away
- Interneurons: the (middle man) and helps the other 2 neuroma communicate
What are the 3 nerve wrappings that cover the nerve?
- Endoneurium: surrounds individual fibres (inside)
- Perineurium: surrounds a group of nerve fibres
- Epineurium: surrounds the entire nerve
What is the differences in gray and white matter?
White: contains fat
Gray: contains no protection
What is a synapse?
The place where impulses are transmitted from one neutron to another
What are 3 structures that make up a synapse?
Synaptic knob, cleft and plasma membrane
What are the 4 divisions of the brain?
Brain stem, cerebellum, diencephalon, cerebrum
