Cells And Tissues Mod 3 Flashcards
What are two types of cells?
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic
Explain the function of the plasma membrane
Outside of the cell, has proteins, semi permiable
Explain the function of cytoplasm
Surrounds all the organelles, home to amino acids
Explain the functions of the nucleus
The control centre, has the genetic code, able to duplicate itself
Explain the function of ribosomes
What are the two types?
Can be attached to the endoplasmic reticulum or free floating, carry substances through the cytoplasm
Rough ER: collects, folds and transports proteins
Smooth ER: manufactures proteins, fats and carbohydrates
Explain the function of the Golgi apparatus
Group of flattened sacs by the nucleus that collect chemicals and transport them to the smooth ER
Explain the function of the mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell, chemical reactions occur giving it power
Explain the function of lysosomes
Little digestives enzymes that protect the cell by eating bacteria and any harmful substances
What is microvolli and what is it’s function?
Short extensions of the plasma membrane that increases surface area and produce movements and enhances absorption and are commonly found in the bowels
What is cilia and what does it do?
Long extensions found on exposed surfaces that move freely helping to propel mucus commonly found in Fallopian tubes
What is flagella, it’s function and where is it ONLY found?
Single long projections with a tail
Found only in some
What are the three ways of passives transports?
Diffusion, osmosis and filtration
Define diffusion
Substances that scatter them selves evenly in open spaces
Define osmosis
Diffusion of water through a semi permeable membrane that move from a low to high concentration
Define active transport
Moves from a higher to lower concentration requires ion pumps, phagocytosis and pinocytosis
