- Mechanical: chewing, swallowing and peristalsis
2. Chemical: breaks up food molecules into smaller molecules

- Ingestion: eating or drinking by mouth
- Secretion: saliva breaking down enzymes in mouth
- Mixing/propulsion: contraction and relaxation of muscles
- Digesting: breaking down food into smaller pieces
- Absorption: taking in nutrients and water from food
- Defection: poop what’s left

What are the 4 layers of the digestive tract?
A
- Mucosa: mucus production
- Submucosa: connective tissue layers
- Muscularis: muscle layer
- Serosa: serous membrane that covers outside organs

What are the 3 sets of salivary glands and their functions?
A
- Parotid glands: secretes serous saliva that have digestive enzymes
- Submandibular glands: produces both serous and mucus saliva
- Sublingual glands: produces mucus saliva

A
- Cardia: the part where the esophagus meets the stomach
- Fundus: upper most area
- Body: largest party between the fundus and pylorus
- Pylorus: divides into the antrum and canal

Why are the 4 types of cells in the stomach?
A
Mucous cells: secrete alkaline mucous to protect the epithelium from stomach acid
Parietal cells: secretes stomach acid
Chief cells: secretes pepsin
G cells: secretes gastrin
