Reproductive System Mod 14 Flashcards
Define the testes
Located in the scrotum
Covered by the tunica albuginea
Divides into lobules that has seminiferous tubules: sperm is developed along the walls
Has interstitial cells that produce testosterone
What are the 2 functions of the testes?
- Spermatogenesis: sperm production
2. Produces testosterone
What is the epididymis?
Single, coiled tube where sperm matures and learns how to swim
Located on the top and behind the testis in the scrotum
What is the vas deferens?
Thick, smooth and muscular reproductive duct that receives sperm from the epididymis and transports it to the scrotal sac
What is the ejaculatory duct and urethra?
The vas deferens extends over the top of the bladder and joins the seminal vesicle to create the ejaculatory duct and sperm empties into the urethra
What are seminal vesicles?
Glands that produce about 60% of seminal fluid
What is the prostate gland?
Doughnut shaped below the bladder
Represents about 30% of seminal fluid
What are Cowper’s glands?
Pea sized and shaped
Contain 5% of seminal fluid
Responsible for pre cum
Define the scrotum
Skin covered pouch suspended from the groin
Define the penis
Covered by foreskin, highly sensitive tissue
What are the 3 columns of erectile tissue of the penis?
2 dorsal columns: corpora cavernosa
1 ventral column: (surrounds the urethra) corpus spongiosum
Define the ovaries
Paired glands attached to ligaments in the pelvic cavity on each side of the uterus
Define ovarian follicles
Contains an oocyte (an immature sex cell)
What is the function of ovaries?
- Oogenesis: cell division of daughter cells and produces female sex cells
- Produces estrogen and progesterone: estrogen develops secondary sex characteristics
Progesterone stimulates activity of uterine epithelium and help estrogen produce a period
What are Fallopian tubes?
Have finger like projections called fimbriae
Ovum leaves the ovary to travel to the Fallopian tubes then the uterus
