Integumentary System Mod 4 Flashcards
What is the chemical level?
Atoms->Molecules->Compounds and Elements
What is the tissue level?
Cells acting together to perform a function
What does the integumentary system consist of?
Skin, hair, nails and glands
What are membranes?
Cover and protect the body, line body cavities, secrete fluids to reduce friction
What are the 2 major categories of body membranes?
Epithelial and connective tissue
What are the 3 types of epithelial membranes?
Cutaneous, serous and mucous
Define the serous membrane
Two layers: parietal layer that lines the walls of cavities
Visceral layer: covers the surface organ
They create fluid that lubricates organs that move ex. lungs expanding and contracting
Define mucous membranes
Lines body surfaces to the outside world ex.nose, mouth and anus
What are synovial membranes?
Capsules that line the joints so bones don’t rub together
What are the 5 layers of the skin?
- epidermis
- dermis
- papillary layer
- reticular layer
- hypodermis
Define the epidermis
Outer layer of the skin,
What are the 5 layers of the epidermis
- Stratum corneum
- Stratum lucidum
- Stratum granulosum
- Stratum spinosum
- Stratum basale
Define the dermis
What are the 2 layers?
Composed mostly of connective tissues, tough and strong but also can be stretchable and has two layers papillary layer and the reticular layer
Define the papillary layer
Forms fingerprints, where your touch and pain receptors are located
Define the reticular layer
The deepest layer contains collagen and elastic fibres, blood vessels, sweat glands and hair follicles
