Fluid Balance Mod 17 Flashcards
What is fluid balance important?
Helps maintain homeostasis
Balance of input must be balanced by output
What are the average volume of water amounts in a male, female and newborn?
Male- 60%
Female-50%
Baby- 80%
What are the top 3 mechanisms for controlling body fluid?
- Hormones that control urine volume (fluid output)
- Electrolyte concentration
- Capillary blood pressure
What is ADH?
A hormone/ peptide that maintains blood volume and tissue water
Controls the amount of water and the concentration of urine excreted by the kidney
What is aldosterone?
A steroid hormone
Regulates salt and water in the body
What is ANH?
A protein secreted by the heart muscle cells
Generates sodium and water loss
What is a nonelectrolyte?
Organic substance that do not break apart in water ex. glucose
What is an electrolyte?
Compound that breaks apart in water ex. potassium
What is an ion?
Broken apart ions that carry a charge
What is the main function of sodium and potassium in the body?
Fluid and electrolyte balance
Nerve conduction and muscle contraction
What are the main functions of calcium in the body?
Maintains structure of bones and teeth
Healthy blood pressure
Acid base balance in the blood
What are the main functions of magnesium in the body?
Assist in cellular reactions
What are the main functions of phosphorus in the body?
Structures bones, teeth, DNA and RNA
Buffer
Assists in energy production and storage
