Endocrine System Mod 15 Flashcards
What are the 6 organs in the endocrine system?
- Pituitary gland
- Thyroid gland
- Pancreas
- Adrenal glands
- Testes
- Ovaries
What are the 2 main classes of hormones?
- Non steroid hormones
2. Steroid hormones
Define non steroid hormones
They bind to the cell membrane and provide communication between endocrine glands and target organs
Define steroid hormones
Mostly sex hormones
Cross over the cell membrane -> nucleus -> tells the DNA to do something
What is an example for a negative feed back loop in the endocrine system?
Insulin delivery
Eat food -> blood sugars go up -> secretes insulin into the blood -> glucose levels drops -> pancreas stops producing insulin when blood sugars stabilize
What is an example for a positive feed back loop in the endocrine system?
Contractions
Baby grows-> stretch receptors activate in uterus-> brain releases oxytocin-> oxytocin causes uterine contractions-> get more intense-> baby is born
Define the hypothalamus
Produces ADH and oxytocin
Also produces releasing and inhibiting hormones
What are the 6 hormones that the pituitary gland produces and what is their function?
GH (growth hormone): makes tissues bigger
TSH (thyroid stimulate hormone): stimulates the thyroid
ACTH (adrenaline): activates the flight or flight response
FSH (folicle stimulating hormone): matures ovaries and testes
PRL (prolactin): allows breasts to lactate
ADH: kidney reabsorption
What is the function of the thyroid gland?
Secretes 2 hormones that regulate energy and metabolism
Regulates how fast your body processes are happening
What is the function of the parathyroid glands?
Located on the back of the thyroid secretes PTH
What 2 parts are in the adrenal glands and what do they do?
- Medulla: releases epinephrine and noepinephrine
2. Cortex: releases cortisol and aldosterone
Define gonads
Sex gland
Makes gametes
Male= testes = testosterone
Female= ovaries = estrogen
Define the thymus gland
Produces T cells
Produces and secretes thymosins
