Blood Mod 11 Flashcards
What is the function of blood?
Transportation, regulation and protection
What is blood made up of and what are the percentages?
Plasma (55%) Formed elements (45%) Red blood cells White blood cells Platelets
What is the function of an erythrocyte?
Transportation for oxygen and carbon dioxide
What is the function of a neurophil?
Immune defence
What are red blood cells?
Disk shaped, transports oxygen and carbon dioxide, has hemoglobin, lasts for 120 days, always being destroyed and produced
What is hematocrit?
The proportion by volume of blood that consists of red blood cells
What are white blood cells?
Round, has different types
What are platelets?
Smallest formed element
Released from bone marrow
Essential for blood clotting
What is the difference between antigens and antibodies?
Antigens: activate the immune system
Antibodies: stimulated by antigens and are the fighters
What antigens do the 4 blood types have?
A-A antigen
B-B antigen
AB- both antigens
O- neither antigens
What is an Rh factor?
Makes your blood either positive or negative
Positive: Antigen is on the red blood cell’s surface
Negative: Antigen is not on the red blood cell’s surface
What is the function of a neutrophil and a monocyte?
Immune defense
What is the function of a eosinophil?
Defence against parasites
What is the function of a basophil?
Inflammatory response
What is the function of a B lymphocyte?
Produces antibodies
