what is sensory impairment?
when one or more of a persons senses ie sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, is no longer normal
what are symptoms of visual impairment?
reduction or loss of vision
blurring of vision
eye pain
burning sensation
gritty feeling
what are causes of visual impairment?
glaucoma
cataract
macular degeneration
diabetic retinopathy
trachoma
what is the cause of glaucoma?
a rise in intraocular pressure
what are the symptoms of glaucoma?
affects peripheral vision first
bilateral
blurred vision, rainbow circles around bright light
glaucoma treatment?
eye drops

what are cataract symptoms?
clouding of the lens in the eye
reduction in vision
difficulty with bright lights and seeing at night

what are the 2 types of macular degeneration?
wet and dry
what is wet macular degeneraton?
growth of new vessels under retina which then break and leak into macula
severe sight loss in a matter of months
rapid loss of central vision
what is dry macular degeneration?
hereditary element, myopia may be a predisposing factor
bilateral
gradual loss of central vision
treatment for dry macular degeneration?
none
visual aids, healthy diet, exercise, stop smoking, regular eye tests
treatment for wet macular degeneration?
eye injections - antiVEGF medicine - aflibercept
photodynamic therapy
how may diabetes affect the eyes?
retinopathy - retinal degeneration and inflammation
what is hemianopia?
blindness in one half of the visual field
