FP facebows + articulators Flashcards
what is an articulator?
hinged mechanical device to which maxillary and mandibular casts are attached, and which is intended to reproduce as closely as possible the relationship of patients maxilla to mandible in RCP or ICP
why do you use articulators?
diagnostic study casts during treatment planning
may facilitate the lab technician in making appropriately shaped crowns , bridges and dentures with functional occlusal schemes
what are the types of articulators?
simple hinge (plane line)
average value (freeplane)
semi adjustable (denar, dentatus)
fully adjustable
describe a simple hinge articulator?
equivalent to holding casts in your hand
occlusal relationship only correct when casts are together
how is the opening arc of casts in a simple hinge articulator determined?
determined by the hinge design and is the same for all casts mounted on this device
describe an average value articulator?
sufficiently accurate for reproducing ICP
can use for posterior restorations where there is obvious guidance from other teeth
can use for complete removable prostheses where there is balanced articulation
what type of articulator is often used for fixed prostheses?
semi adjustable denar (arcon)
difference between arcon and non arcon semi adjustable articulators?
arcon - mandibular condyle
non arcon - maxillary condyle
what type of articulator is often used for removable prostheses?
semi adjustable dentatus (non arcon)
what is the terminal hinge axis?
an axis through both condyles when they are in most superior and posterior unstrained position in the glenoid fossa
what is posselts envelope of movement?
It is a diagrammatic representation of a sagittal view of maximum mandibular movement
in a facebow, what does the bite fork record?
records position of teeth
in a facebow, what does the bow record?
position of the condyle
what is the purpose of the jig in a facebow?
to link the bow and bite fork
what is the purpose of the pointer in a facebow?
to align teeth to horizontal axis (frankfurt plane)
