SOP #5: Response to Gas Emergencies Flashcards
When at a gas emergency, vehicles shall not be parked?
in front of a building, near manhole cover, storm drain or underground vault
What shall members where at a reported gas leak?
Full protecting clothing and SCBA
At a gas emergency, how many many members must remain outside to maintain awareness of the number and identity of personnel in the building?
1; additional companies shall stage and await specific instructions
At a gas emergency what should the company officer request fire alarm to do?
Have responsible gas supplier respond
When evacuating civilians from the structure we must make sure to ?
minimize risk of causing a spark
do not permit electrical switches to be turned on/off
do not transmit over the radio
extinguish all open flames.
note: evacuation may be conducted from outside the building or affected area to minimize risk of members.
T or F: If gas to building can be shut off at the meter or remote without having FF having to enter vapor rich atmosphere, this shall be done immediately?
True
Upon arrival of a gas detection equipment whether from the department or gas supplier, what shall be determined?
Whether it is safe to enter the structure or part of the structure that is vapor rich
If the IC determines that structure at a gas emergency can not be entered at all our duties are limited to ?
a. Evacuation of residents
b. Turning off gas when the shut off is outside the building
c. Ventilation whatever can be performed from a safe location outside
the structure
d. Contacting the responsible gas supplier
e. Withdrawing to a safe location and establish a perimeter
f. Preparing for fire and/or explosion
At a gas emergency due consideration should be given by the IC to ?
Deployment of handlines and/or feeders
At an emergency where underground gas leak is suspected, IC shall ensure that?
Basements of adjacent structures are checked with CGI.
note: Ethyl mercaptan may leach out when traveling through soil.
Combustible CGI shall be used, maintained and calibrated in accordance with the?
Manufacturer’s Instructions. Commanding officer of unit with CGI is responsible for maintaining records of all maintenance and calibration.
Who can use the Combustible gas indicators?
Personnel who is trained and have read the instructions materials and who are familiar with the properties of natural gas, propane and similar gasses.
When using the combustible gas indicator (CGI) how should you use it?
Start outside the building or area in question and retaken every few feet thereafter.
At doors start at the top and bottoms before opening. Especially when going down stairs.
No member should be in front of member operating CGI
If CGI reading is below 10% Lower explosive limit (LEL) how can members operate?
with extreme caution.
Natural gas rises and could accumulate at the tops of shafts or stairways.
Propane sinks and accumulating at floor level in basements.
What should be done if LEL is 10% or higher?
Building shall be evacuated immediately.
Members should not enter or operate in area where the concentration of gas is 10% of LEL higher unless to save a human life that is in danger and there is no other way of making the rescue.
