Solitary Confinement (BH 10-25-2018/DS 10/30/18) Flashcards
confined space that does not contain or have the potential to contain any hazard capable of causing death or serious physical harm
non permit confined space
four non permit confined spaces
basements
attics
crawl spaces
residential cellars
- contains or has potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere
- contains a material that has the potential for engulfing an entrant
- has an internal configuration such that an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by inward converging walls or by a floor that slopes downward and tapers to a smaller cross section
- contains any other recognized serious safety or health hazard
Permit required confined space
IDLH
immediately dangerous to life and health
CSP
certified safety professional
effects similar to frostbite due to prolonged exposure to water and cold on the skin with a lack of blood flow due to the cold
trench foot
Air displacement gasses
- carbon dioxide
- Helium
- argon
- nitrogen
APR
air purifying respirator
a life threatening condition that results in failure of the bodys internal warming system
Hypothermia
a condition resulting in death or unconsciousness caused by inadequate oxygen, presence of noxious agents, or other obstruction to normal breathing
Asphyxiated
CPR
Cardiopulmonary Resucutation
LEL
Lower Explosive Limit
LFL
Lower Flammable Limit
MSDS

There are three technician roles associated with confined space operations.
Attendant, Supervisor, Entrant
Allows technicians to enter a jointly occupied manhole while working alone.
OSHA 1910.168 o (3)
Acceptable oxygen levels are.
19.5% to 22.5%
Blood flow to skin increases, causing flow to decrease to vital organs. Results in mild shock and can cause a stroke if not treated.
Heat Exhaustion
Muscular pain and spasms due to heavy exertion.
Heat Cramps
A life threatening condition in which the body’s temperature control system that produces sweat to cool the body, stops working. Body temperature can rise so high that it causes brain damage or death.
Heat Stroke
Freezing of a part of the body.
Frostbite
Four categories of Hazardous Atmospheres
Flammable, Toxic, Irritant and or Corrosive, Asphyxiating
The composition of normal atmosphere.
Approximately 20.9% oxygen, 78.1% nitrogen, and 1% argon
