Any social category used to identify people
Achieved status
A status one works to obtain
Ascribed status
A status one is assigned to involuntarily, not based on ones action
Master status
A status so dominant in someone’s life that crowns out other statuses
Role strain
Strain brought on by multiple responsibilities from ONE ROLE
Role conflict
Difficulty balancing multiple, different roles
Role exit
The process disengaging from a role
EX) graduation
Role engulfment
The expansion of a role to dominate one’s life
Primary groups
Longer lasting, deep bonds
Secondary groups
Short-lasting and more superficial
Peer groups
People who have shared interests, are similar in age, background, etc. Usually self-selected
Family groups
People defined by genetic relationships, marriage or adoption
In-groups
Categories that someone identifies as a member of
Out-group
Categories that someone does not identify as a member
Reference groups
Groups that we compare ourselves to
