SOC21 Planes And Axes Of Movement Flashcards
What are planes?
Planes are imaginary flat surfaces that divides the body into sections.
What are the 3 types of planes?
- sagittal plane
- frontal plane
- transverse plane
What is the sagittal plane?
The sagittal plane divides the body in left to right, resulting in a left side and a right side.
What are the movements of the sagittal plane?
Flexion and extension (forwards and backwards)
What is the definition of a sagittal plane?
An imaginary line dividing the body vertically into left and right sides.
What is the frontal plane?
The frontal plane divides the body in front to back, resulting in a front and a back.
What movements does the frontal plane include?
Adduction and abduction (sidewards).
What is the definition of the frontal plane?
An imaginary line dividing your body vertically from front to back.
What is an example of having a sagittal plane?
Somersaults
What is an example of having a frontal plane?
Cartwheels
What is the transverse plane?
The transverse plane divides the body across the middle, giving a top and bottom section.
What is the movement in the transverse plane?
Rotation
What is the definition of the transverse plane?
An imaginary line dividing the body horizontally from top to bottom.
What is an example of the transverse plane?
Twist jumps on a trampoline
What are Axes?
An imaginary line around which something turns.
What do Axes do?
Our joints rotate around axes, and these axes allow movement to take place in one of the planes.
What is the definition of an axes?
An imaginary straight line around which something turns.
Where does a frontal axes run?
From side to side.
Where does the sagittal axes run?
From front to back.
Where does the vertical axis run?
From top to bottom.
Examples of a plane and axis in a Somersault.

Examples of a plane and a axis in a Cartwheel?
