What is a soft tissue injury (joint injuries)?
Joints are where two or more bones meet. They are prone to injury because of movement outisde of their normal range. It can be a tear, overstreched tendons, ligaments, muscles , and cartilage.
What is a sprain?
A sprain is damaged to a ligament and it is most common is a twisted or overstretched ankle.
What is a strain?
A starin is a twist, tear or overstretched muscle or tendon. Most common strains are in the back and the hamstring.
What is a torn cartilage?
Cartilage is a firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones. It absorbs the impact of the bones while reducing the fricyion during sports activitys.
What is a fracture?
A fracture is a broken or cracked bone. Types: - stress - simple - compound - in closed
What is a dislocation?
A dislocation is when a bone or joint is forced out of its normal position.
What is abrasions?
Abrasion or grazes can be caused by friction of the skin against a rough surface, a concrete playground or an artificial surface.
What is a concussion?
An impact to the head that causes unconsciousness, confusion or memory loss.
What are the 5 ways in which we can prevent injuries?
- By the application of principles of training (e.g. not overtraining)
- Playing to the rules of competition to ensure players safety (e.g. referees)
- Protective equipment/clothing (e.g. gumshields, scrumhats)
- Checking equipment and facilities for safety and good condition (e.g. waterlogged pitch, first aid kit available)
- Warming up/Cooling down creates a dispersal of lactic acid (e.g. stretching)
What does the R in RICE stand for?
REST the injury for 48 hours.
What does the I in RICE stand for?
ICE for 20minutes 4-8 times a day.
What does C stand for in RICE?
COMPRESS the injury and keep pressure.
What does the E in RICE stand for?
ELEVATE is to raise the leg from 6 - 10 inches above the body.
