SOC12 Skeletal System Flashcards
What is flexion?
Flexion is the bending movemnet that decreases the angle between body parts.
What is Extension?
Extension is the straightening movement that increases the angle between the body parts.
What is dorsi-flexion?
Dorsi-flexion is the bending or flexing the toes up, closer to the shin.
What is platar-flexion?
Plantar-flexion is the exetnding or pointing the toes down, away from the shin.
What is adduction?
Adduction is the movement that pulls towards the midline of the body.
What is abduction?
Abduction is the movement that pulls away from the midline of the body.
What is rotation?
Rotation is the movement around a single axis or pivot point.
What is circumduction?
Circumduction is the moving in a circular or conical shape.
What are tendons?
Tendons are non-elastic fibres that attach muscles to bone and help to move them. They also grow in strength the more you use them.
What are ligaments?
Ligaments are elastic fibres that joins bone to bone, usually to hold things together and keep them stable. They keep your skeleton supported whilst allowing movement.
What is a pivot joint?
A pivot joint allows bones to rotate (neck) e.g. it allows movement of the neck.
What is a hinge joint?
It allows only backwards and forwards motion e.g. it is in the knee so that the leg can be bended or straightened, elbow as well.
What is the ball-and-socket joint?
Is a long bone (ball) fitted into a cup-shaped hole (the socket). However it does not have as much muscle to protect it.
What is the condyloid joint?
It allows us to do a circular motion.
What is the real name for shoulder blade?
Scapula
