SOC21 Axes And Planes Of Movement Flashcards
What are planes?
Planes are theoretical divisions that divide the human body into sections. There are three planes of motion in the body.
What is the saggital plane?
The Sagittal plane divides the body in left to right, resulting in a left side and a right side. Movements: flexion and extension
Example of the saggital plane
Somersaults
What is the frontal plane?
The Frontal plane divides the body in front to back, resulting in a front and a back. Movements: adduction and abduction
Example of the frontal plane
Cartwheels
What is the transverse plane?
The Transverse plane divides the body across the middle, giving a top and bottom section. Movements: rotation
Example of transverse plane
Twist jumps on a trampoline
What are axes?
Our joints rotate around axes, and these axes allow movement to take place in one of the planes.
Definition: an imaginary straight line around which something turns.
What is the frontal axis and what does it pair with?
The frontal axis runs from side to side and pairs with the sagittal plane
What is the sagittal axis and what does it pair with?
The sagittal axis runs from front to back and pairs with the frontsl plane
What is the vertical axis and what does it pair with?
The vertical axis runs from top to bottom and pairs with the transverse plane
