SOC17 Structure Of The Respiratory System Flashcards
What is in the respiratory system?
The respiratory system includes the nose, mouth, throat, voice box, windpipe, lungs and blood vessels
Why do we need our respiratory system?
To get oxygen into the body
To get carbon dioxide out of the body
In sport or physical activity, the respiratory system and cardiovascular systems must work closely together to keep the body supplied with oxygen
We lactate quicker with less oxygen
Formula for inspiration?
20% oxygen + 0.4% carbon dioxide
Formula for exhalation?
16% oxygen + 4% carbon dioxide
What happens to our breathing when we begin to exercise?
Depth of breathing increases
Your breathing rate increases
What is vital capacity?
The greatest amount of air that can be passed into and out of the lungs by the most forceful inspiration and expiration
What is tidal volume?
The amount of air inspired and expired with each breath
What are the components of the respiratory system?
Nasal cavity & mouth, larynx, trachea, lung, bronchi/bronchus, bronchioles/bronchus, alveoli/alveolus, diaphragm/diaphragm muscles
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of oxygen needed at the end of a physical activity to break down any lactic acid. This is the amount of oxygen needed to oxidise lactic acid to carbon dioxide and water
What type of exercise does oxygen debt usually happen?
Anaerobic exercise
What is VO2 max?
This is the volume of oxygen an athlete can consume whike exercising at maximum capacity
How does the cardiovascular system and respiratory system work together?
An efficient respiratory system aide th cardiovascular system by providing a constant supply of oxygen for the muscles and by removing carbon dioxide.
