SOC10 Types Of Injurys And Injury Prevention Flashcards
What are the 8 injurys?
Soft tissue injury
Sprains
Strains
Torn cartilage
Concussion
Abrasions
Fracture
Dislocations
What is a soft tissue injury and how does it occur?
They are a tear or overstretched tendons, ligaments, muscles and cartilage from when the joint is taken beyond its normal range
What is a sprain and how does it occur?
A damaged ligament most common in the ankle caused from falling or colliding or stretching too far past its normal range
What is a strain and how does it occur?
A twist or a tear, overstretched tendon or muscles common in back or hamstrings caused from overuse
What is torn cartilage and how does it occur?
The substance which absorbs impact and reduces friction between gets torn caused from long term overuse
What is a fracture and its types and how does it occur?
A broken or a cracked bone. Types: stress, compound, closed, simple. Caused through some form of contact or overuse.
What is a disloaction and how does it occur?
When a bone at a joint is forced out of its normal position from severe contact or a hardblow
What is an abrasion and how does it occur?
Cuts or grazes on your skin against a rough surface from fridtion against a surface from falling over or getting tackled
What is a concussion and how do they occur?
A big impact to the head causing unconsciousness, confusion or memory loss from a blow to the head.
What are the 5 ways to prevent an injury?
• Using the correct principles of training
• Playing to the rules and competition
• Protective equipment / clothing
• Checking equipment and facilities
• Warming up / cooling down
How do you use the correct principles of training to prevent injury?
Its important to group performers of the same level to ensure balanced competition and also avoid overuse injuries
What does playing to the rules and competition do?
The rules help to ensure player safety, if they are broken, participants are punished.
Why do we need protective equipment and clothing?
Many activities require protective equipment or specific clothing, its also important to not wear clothing that might injure others.
Why do we need to check the facilities and equipment?
You need to check for safety before an activity. It must be safe and secure and all equipment in good condition.
Why do we need to warm up amd cool down?
We need to perform a light warm up to warm out muscles up preventing injury and we need to cool down gradually to our resting heart rate after an activity.
