Soc 27: Engagement Patterns in Sport Flashcards
What factors affect engagement in sports?
Gender
Age
Socio-economic group
Disability
Ethnicity/Religion
Influence of other people
How does gender affect engagement in sport?
Despite women’s participation levels increasing, there are still fewer women participating in sport than men. Some sports offer more opportunities to one sex over another. 40.7% of men and 31.2% of women play sport in the UK.
How does age affect engagement in sport?
It affects a person’s ability to participate in certain activities.
Some competitive events have age restrictions.
Work/family responsibilities may prevent a middle aged adult from participation.
Some activities are more suitable for younger people, e.g. rugby is too physically demanding for an elderly person.
How does your socio-economic group affect engagement in sport?
They affect a persons chance to access sport/physical activity - people from low group less likely to participate.
Most activities have associated costs, e.g. hire of facilities, lessons, equipment and clothing. Some are more expensive than others.
Your socio-economic group influences the sports you get involved in with some sports such as rowing being seen as more ‘middle class’.
How does ethnicity affect engagement in sport?
It refers to a population whose members identify with each other and are united by common cultural, linguistic or religious traits.
This can influence the sports they play and succeed in.
Racism is still an issue despite efforts to promote racial equality.
Countries may have a particular sport as part of their culture.
More notably in football there has been racist abuse against non white players.
Religious activities may affect someone competing.
How does disability affect engagement in sport?
They are unable to compete in certain activities as less clubs are available but opportunities are increasing.
Activities such as wheelchair basketball have been adapted to help.
More availability is required in schools and at local level.
Some equipment may be particularly expensive.
