What is soft tissue injury?
When there is a tear or overstretched tendons,ligaments, muscles and cartilage. Occur when joint is taken beyond normal range.
What are sprains?
A damaged ligament which causes swelling- most common is overstretched or twisted ankle. Can be caused by falling/collision or when stretching too far past the usual range of a joint.
What are strains?
A twist, tear or overstretched muscle/tendon. Happen due to overuse and most common are back and hamstring.
What is Torn Cartilage?
Tears at the joint often caused by long term overuse.
What is Cartilage?
A firm elastic substance which lines the bones and absorbs impact on the bones.
What is a Fracture?
A broken or cracked bone caused by fatigue or through contact.
What is Dislocation?
When a bone or joint is forced out of its normal position.
What are Abrasions?
Grazes are caused by friction of the skin against a rough surface.
What are Concussions?
Impact to the head which causes confusion, memory loss, unconsciousness, loss of balance.
What are the 5 injury preventions?
- Using correct Principles of training.
- Play to the Rules
- Appropriate Equipment and Clothing
- Check Equipment and Facilities
- Warm up/ Cool Down
Examples for each injury prevention.
- Not overtraining
- Rules ensure player safety
- Protective equipment is required in sports like rugby/cricket.
- Surface should be safe to play on
- Stretching decreases muscle stiffness
