Q

What are the short term effects on the heart?

A

Heart rate increases (athletes tend to have lower resting heart rate and quicker recovery rate).
Stroke volume increases as a result of heart increasing in size, strength and thickness.
Cardiac output increases.

Q

What are the short term effects on the respiratory system?

A

More oxygen needs to be taken in and more carbon dioxide needs to be removed.
Depth and rate of breathing increases.
Oxygen debt occurs in intense exercise as more oxygen used up thane taken in.
