Soc 21: Planes and Axes of Movements Flashcards
What are planes?
They are imaginary flat surfaces that divide our body into sections.
What are axes?
Imaginary straight lines around which something turns. Our joints rotate around axes to allow movement in planes.
What are the types of planes and axes?
Planes: Sagittal, Frontal, Transverse
Axes: Frontal, Sagittal, Vertical
What is the sagittal plane?
Line that divides body vertically into a left side and a right side.
Movements: Flexion and extension.
E.g. somersault
What is the frontal plane?
Line dividing body vertically in front to back, resulting in a front and back.
Movements: Adduction and abduction
E.g. cartwheel
What is a transverse plane?
Line dividing body horizontally into a top and bottom.
Movements: Rotation.
E.g. twisting while trampolining, discus throw.
What is the frontal axis?
Line passing horizontally through body from side to side.
Allows flexion and extension.
Works with sagittal plane.
What is a sagittal axis?
Line passing horizontally frim front to back.
Allows abduction and adduction.
Works with frontal plane.
What is the vertical axis?
Line passing vertically through body, allowing rotation in upright position.
Allows rotation.
Works with transverse plane.
