Engagement in sport can be affect by:
● Gender
● Age
● Socio-economic group
● Ethnicity
● Disability
● Influence of other people e.g. family, friends and role models.
Participating rates vary according to:
gender - some sports still seen as ‘male’ or
‘female’
• age - some sports suit younger people (e.g. gymnastics) or older people (e.g. golf, bowls)
• socio-economic group - can affect choice of sport, but things change; cost can be a factor
• ethnicity - some sports more common in certain groups; racism in sport
• disability - resources and opportunities may be fewer
Commercialisation
making something available on
the market, or using something to make a profit
Different types of sporting behaviour
sportsmanship - competitor plays to the rules and does not try to cheat
• gamesmanship - competitor aims to win by any means, within or outside of the rules
• deviance - behaviour that falls outside the norms of what is thought to be acceptable
