Soc 13- Joints, Movements, Ligaments, Tendons Flashcards
What are the different types of joint?
Pivot
Hinge
Ball and socket
Condyloid
8 different types of movement
Flexion and extension
Dorsiflexion and Plantar flexion
Abduction and Adduction
Rotation and Circumduction
What are Tendons?
Tendons are non-elastic fibres that attach muscle to bone and help to move them.
How do Tendons help?
Tendons let you apply power and movement. Tendons also grow in strength the more you use them.
What are ligaments?
Ligaments are elastic fibres that joins bone to bone, usually to hold things together and keep them stable
How do ligaments help us?
They keep your skeleton supported whilst allowing movement.
Definition of Flexion
This movement decreases the angle between two body parts. For example, bending the elbow or knee, or bending forward at the waist.
Definition of extension
This movement increases the angle between two body parts. For example, straightening the elbow or knee, or bending backward at the waist.
Defintion of Dorsiflexion
This movement involves lifting the foot upwards towards the shin. It decreases the angle between the dorsum (top) of the foot and the leg
Definition of Plantar Flexion
This movement involves pointing the foot downward away from the shin. It increases the angle between the dorsum of the foot and the leg.
Defintion of Abduction
This movement moves a limb or other part away from the midline of the body or from another part. For example, raising the arms or legs sideways away from the body.
Definition of Adduction
This movement brings a limb or other part toward the midline of the body or toward another part. For example, lowering the arms or legs back towards the body’s side.
Definition of Rotation
This movement involves turning a body part around its long axis.
Definition of Circumduction
This is a circular movement that combines flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction in sequence. It allows a limb to describe a cone-shaped pathway. For example, moving the arm in a circular motion at the shoulder joint.
What is the movement of extension?
Straightening movement that increases the angle between the body parts
