Soc 26: Skill, Practise, Guidance And Feedback Flashcards
What is an open skill and example?
Always changing
Affected by environment
Involve decision making
E.g dribbling past a defender
What is a closed skill and example?
Stable environment
Mot affected by environment
Self paced
E.g free throw in basketball
What is a basic/simple skill and example?
Easy, low concentration
Little information to process
Few decisions made
Use in many sports
E.g side-foot pass in football
What is a complex skill and example?
Hard, high concentration
Lots of information to process
Decisions need to be made quickly
E.g spike in volleyball
What is high organisation and example?
Complicated phases
Complex and require large amounts of attention
Need high levels of attention and coordination
Difficult to break down into phases
E.g somersault in trampolining
What is low organisation and example?
Uncomplicatied stages
Simple
Usally break down the skill into phases
E.g set shot in baskeyball
What is massed practise and exmaple?
Practise until learnt
Without a break
Intense and mentally challenging
E.g athletes who are fit and motivated
What is distributed practise and example?
Over several sessions
Rest breaks
E.g players of lower ability, experience or fitness level
What is fixed practise and example?
Single situation
Until perfected
Closed skills normally practised this way
E.g set shot in basketball
What is variable practise and exmaple?
Skill in a variety of different situations
Essential for open skills
Lower ability or fitness level,
E.g weather/conditions/opposition
What is the definition or guidance?
Information to aid the learning of a skill:can be given visually, manually or mechanically
Whay is visual guidance?
Coach showing technique or ‘perfect model’
Showing a video
Easy to understand but harder for difficult skills
Helps visulate skill
Effective at early stages of learning
What is verbal guidance?
Hard to understand, but important for harder skills
Provided during performance and ideal for open skills
Effective used in conjunction with other forms of guidance
For advanced performers
What is manual guidance?
Using physical contact to help performer complete a skill
Gives ‘feel’ for movement, but not always practical
Used with learners of all abilities
Learner gain kinaesetic sense of movement
Build confidence
What is mechanical guidance?
Using equipment to help complete skills
Very effective in early stages of learning
Learner gain a kinaesthetic of movement
Build confidence
E.g arm bands in swimming
What is the definition of feedback?
Information received before, during or after a performance about the performance
What is intrinsic feedback?
Comes from performer themselves
Experienced performers will know when something is right or wrong unlike beginners
What is extrinsic feedback?
Comes from an external source such as a teacher or coach
Beginners will benefit greatly from extrinsic feedback as may not have knowledge to assess own performance
Motivate them to improve
What is concurrent feedback?
Provided during performance
Acted on immediately
E.g communication from sidelines
What is terminal feedback?
Provided at end of the game or performace
Aimed at being more reflective and giving overview of performance
What is mental preparation?
Starts before warm-up in game.
Right mindset, something practise during training
Get help from e.g coach
What is imagery?
A mental or psychological technique in which performer imagines or visualises themselves being successful.
E.g Taking penalty-picture ball hitting back of net
