Soc 12- Skeletal System Flashcards
What are 5 functions of skeletal system?
Protect vital organs
Muscle attachment
Joints for movement
Storing calcium and phosphorus
Red and white blood cell production
What are the bones in your arms?
Radium, ulna, humerus
What are the bones in hand/wrist?
Carpels (cufflinks), metacarpels (wrists), phalanges
What are the bones in foot/ankle?
Tarsals, metatarsels, phalanges
What bones are in your legs?
Femur, patella,tibia, fibula
What bones are in your torso?
Pelvis
What bones are in the spine?
Sternum, vertebrae- cervical, thoracic, lumber, sacrum, coccyx
What is the real name for shoulder blade?
Scapula
What is the real name for collar bone?
Clavicle
What is the real name for the skull?
Cranium
What are long bones and sporting example?
Longer than wide. A long bone has a shaft and two ends.
Humerus, radius, ulna, metacarpels, phalanes, femur, tibia, fibula
Vital to generate movement, strength and speed.
What are short bones and sporting example?
Generally same in length, width and thickness.
Tarsals, patella, carpels
What is a pivot joint
Pivot- allow bones to rotate. Rotates inside another bone or ligament. In your neck/first 2 vertabrae, C1 and C2
What is a hinge joint?
Hinge- allow for foward and backward motion. Allow for flextion and extension. For exmaple, knee and elbow
What is a ball and socket joint?
Ball and socket- a ball goes into a socket, in your humerous into scapula or femur into pelvis. Allows lots of range of motion.
What is a condyloid joint?
Condyloid- Similar to ball in socket, ball rests against end of bone, allows circular motion. In your wrist and ankle
What are the 4 types of joints?
Pivot
Hinge
Ball and socket
Condyloid
What is flexion?
Bending movement that decreases the angle between body parts, shoulder, hip, elbow. Bicep curl
What is extension?
Straightening movement that increases the angle between body parts, shoulder, hip. Swinging arm
What is dorsiflexion?
Bending or flexing the toes up, closer to the shin, ankle. Position feet at starting blocks.
What is plantar flexion?
Extending or pointing the toes down, away from the shin, ankle. Gymnast points toes.
What is adduction?
Movement that pulls towards the midline of the body, shoulder, hip. A golfer swings towards the ball
What is abduction?
Movement that pulls away from midline of the body, shoulder, hip. Gymnast moves arms out sideways
What is rotation?
Movement around a single axis or pivot point, shoulder, hip. A tennis player serves
