Soc 18-aerobic, Anaerobic Exercise And Energy Souces Flashcards
What is glucose?
A major source of energy for the most cells in the body
What is aerobic respiration?
The proccess of releasing energy from glucose, using oxygen
What is anaerobic respiration?
The proccess of releasing energy from glucose, without oxygen
What is aerobic exercise?
Working at a moderate intensity allowing the body time to utillise oxygen for energy production and to work for a continuous period, e.g. long distance events
What is lactic acid?
Colourless acid produced in muscle tissues during strennuous excercise when the body is exercising anaerobically at high intenisty
What is cramp?
Painful, involuntary conteaction of a muscle, usally caused by fatigue.
Where does energy mainly come from?
Carbohydrates-main source for high and lower intensity
Fats-for moderate intensity
What are some characteristics of fats?
Usally provide most of bodys energy needs
Fat broken down into fatty acids, absorbed into blood and delivered into cells
Fatty acids that aren’t needed stored in fat cells
What are some examples of fats?
Butter, margarine and cooking oils
Bacon, cheese and nuts
What is daily intake of fats?
No more than 30% of total diet
What are some charactertics of carbohydrates?
Body’s cells uses carbohydrates easier than fat
Only stored in small amounts-enough to last a day or two
Body tends to use them first for energy
What are carbohydates broken down into?
Into glucose or glycogen which can be absorbed through the walls of your small intestine and into the blood
Where and what does glucose do when cells use all?
Pass into the blood, be transported to the lived and then circulated around body
Excess is stored in the liver, ready to be distrubuted if your blood glucose levels get too low
What are complex carbohyrates?
Compex carbohyrates- starchy and found in natural foods such as brown rice, wholemeal bread and wholemeal pasta
Foods of this type help to provide slow releasing and long lasting energy for excerise and should form about half your daily intake.
What are simple carbohydrates?
Stored in their natural form in fruit and vegetables and their refined form in biscuits, cakes and chocolates.
They provide a quick fix of energy.
For example, esting banana at half time
