Soc 17 : The Structure Of The Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the respiratory system ? (Include )
Nose, mouth, throat, voice box , windpipe , lungs and blood vessels
What is the respiratory system ? (Include )
Nose, mouth, throat, voice box , windpipe , lungs and blood vessels
Why do we need our respiratory system ? (3)
- to get oxygen into the body
- to remove carbon dioxide from the body
- in sport our cardiovascular and respiratory system must work very closely together
What is inhaling called ?
Inspiration
What percentage of air do we breath in ?
- 20% oxygen , 0.4 % carbon dioxide
What is exhaling called ?
Exhalation
What percentage air do we breath out ?
- 16% oxygen and 4% carbon dioxide
What happens to our breathing when we begin to exersize ?
Our breathing depth increases
Our breathing rate increases
What is vital capacity ?
This is the greatest amount of air that can be passed in an out of the lungs by the most forceful inspiration and expiration
What is tidal volume ?
Is the amount of air inspired and expired with each breath
What is respiration ?
the movement of air from outside the body into the cells within tissues.
What is the diaphragm ?
the primary muscle used in the process of inspiration, or inhalation. A dome-shaped sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the rest of the body cavity.
What is your trachea ?
the tube that takes air into the chest, also known as the windpipe.
What is your bronchus ( bronchi ) ?
tube along which air passes from the trachea into the lungs.
What is your bronchus ( bronchi ) ?
tube along which air passes from the trachea into the lungs.
What are our alveoli ?
tiny sacs at the end of the bronchioles, where gas exchange takes place.
What is haemoglobin ?
a type of protein found in every red blood cell.
What is gaseous exchange ?
the delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream and the removal of carbon dioxide from the tissues.
What is oxygen debt ?
The amount of oxygen needed at the end of a physical activity to break down any lactic acid.
What is anaerobic excersize ?
working at a high intensity level without oxygen for energy production.
What is VO2 max ?
the volume of oxygen an athlete can consume while exercising at maximum capacity.
