Soc 10 : Types Of Injuries And Injury Preventions Flashcards
What is a soft tissue injury (joint injuries)
Joints are where 2 or more bones meet . They can tear or you can overstrech them and occur if the joint is moved outside its normal range
What is a sprain?
A sprain is a damaged ligament commonly in the ankle if it is twisted or overstreched . Symptons of swelling . It can occur when streching to far past the normal range . Falling , colliding with an opponent
What is a strain ?
A strain is a twist , tear or overstreched muscle or tendon . Commonly in the back or hamstring . It occurs due to an inflamation due to overuse .
What is a torn cartilage ?
Cartilage is a firm elastic substance which absorbs impact on bones while reducing friction during an activity . Often occurs due to wear and tear from long term overuse .
What is a fracture ?
A fracture is a broken or cracked bone . These are the categories : stress fracture , compound fracture, simple fracture and inclosed fracture . It can occur through contact or overuse .
What is a dislocation ?
A dislocation is when a bone at a joint is forced out of its normal position . It can occur as a result of a hard blow which causes the bone to be displaced .
What is an abrasion ?
Caused by friction between you skin and a rough surface e.g a concrete playground or artifical surface . Occurs from a tackle or just simply falling over during an activity .
What is a concussion ?
A concussion is an impact to the head causing unconsciousness , confusion or memory loss . Occurs by a blow to the head .
What are the 5 ways in which we can prevent injuries ?
- application of P.O.T to avoid overuse injuries from overtraining
- playing by the rules . The rules are there to keep players safe (dont 2 foot a player its not the rules)
-protective equipment and clothing . Dont wear jewellary it could hurt your opponent
-check equipment and facilities before use . Orginisers should do this to ensure safety
-warm up and cool down to get oxygenated blood to the muscles in a series of aerobic excersizes .
What does R in RICE stand for ?
Rest - the injury for 48 hours
What does I stand for in RICE ?
Ice - the injury for 20 mins do this 4-8 times per day
What does C stand for in RICE ?
Compress - to help reduce swelling
What does E stand for it RICE ?
Elevate - the injury 6-8 inches from the heart
