Soc 16 : The Structure Of The Blood Vessels Flashcards
What are the 4 main characteristics of arteries ?
- take blood away from the heart
- arteries have got thick elastic walls due to high pressure by carrying oxygenated blood
- the channel the blood flows through , the lumen can widen to allow more blood through
- the pulmonary artery is the only artery that carrys deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs .
What are the 4 main characteristics of the veins ?
- veins carry blood into the heart
- veins have much thinner walls , are less elastic carrying blood at a far lower pressure
- veins contain many valves to help them get blood to the heart without the blood flow going backwards
- the pulmonary vein is different to the other veins as it carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
What are the 4 mains characteristics of the capillaries ?
- capillaries are microscopic vessels - only one cell thick
- at one end , capillaries carry oxygenated blood which transfers oxygen and nutrience into the muscle cells
- at the other end , they carry deoxygenated blood into the veins , picking up waste products
- capillaries are where gaseous exchange takes place
Name all of the parts of the right side of the heart from top to bottom ? ( Think Right side flipped)(7)
- Aorta
- superior Vena cava
- semilunar valves
- right atrium
- tricuspid valve
- inferior vena cava
- right ventricle
Name all the parts of the left side of the heart from top to bottom ? (Think left = right flipped) (6)
- pulmonary artery
- pulmonary vein
- left atrium
- semilunar valves
- bicuspid valve
- left ventricle
What is your immune system ?
the structures and processes in your body that stop disease.
What is thrombokinase ?
substance involved in blood clotting.
What is serotonin ?
hormone that triggers the clotting process.
What is erythrocyte ?
red blood cell.
What is haemoglobin ?
a red protein in the blood that transports oxygen.
What is amaemia ?
a condition where there is a lack of red cells or haemoglobin in the blood.
What is leukocyte ?
white blood cell.
What is a pathogen ?
an agent that causes disease, such as a virus
What is an anti-body ?
chemical that destroys a pathogen.
