Soc 16 : The Structure Of The Blood Vessels Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 4 main characteristics of arteries ?

A
  • take blood away from the heart
  • arteries have got thick elastic walls due to high pressure by carrying oxygenated blood
  • the channel the blood flows through , the lumen can widen to allow more blood through
  • the pulmonary artery is the only artery that carrys deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs .

Q

What are the 4 main characteristics of the veins ?

A
  • veins carry blood into the heart
  • veins have much thinner walls , are less elastic carrying blood at a far lower pressure
  • veins contain many valves to help them get blood to the heart without the blood flow going backwards
  • the pulmonary vein is different to the other veins as it carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart

Q

What are the 4 mains characteristics of the capillaries ?

A
  • capillaries are microscopic vessels - only one cell thick
  • at one end , capillaries carry oxygenated blood which transfers oxygen and nutrience into the muscle cells
  • at the other end , they carry deoxygenated blood into the veins , picking up waste products
  • capillaries are where gaseous exchange takes place
