Medicine that replaces mainstream practices - ie anti vaccination

Using conventional and alternative medicine

What is integrative medicine?
Licensed conventionally traiend providers with additional training that cobines EBM and alternative medicine therapies
What are the guiding principles of integrative medicine?
Involving the patient in his/her health, compassion and caring, entertain non-conventional approaches, evaluate all treatments and consider all aspects of health
How should effectiveness be weighed against harm?
Greater the risk of harm of a treatment, need greater evidence that treatment will be beneficial
What patient characteristics seek CAM?
Women, higher education, hospitalized and painful conditions
Why do most people use alternative treatments?
Not conspiracy theorists, most people combine with traditional medicine and think normal medicine is too expensive
What is the approach of homeopathy?
Like cures like: small microdoses of things are very effective in treating dissease
What are the challenges of giving botanicals?
Many ways to administer: infusion, powder, ointment, syrup, extract, etc.
What are the regulatory issues with botanicals?
Inconsistent quality due to poor regulation, potential for contamination with heavy metals/placebos, can be expensive and effective dose is unknown
What’s better: healthy food or a supplement?
Healthy food
Do environments and space matter in health?
Yes, may improve recovery after surgery
What are the outcomes of patients who use just alternative medicine?
Worse than normal medicine
