Sir Nico PPTs: The Cell Cycle Flashcards
Interphase or Mitotic Phase.
G1, S1, G2
Interphase
Interphase or Mitotic Phase.
Mitosis & Cytokinesis
Mitotic Phase
o longest event in the cycle
o cell grows and makes a new
copy of DNA
o packs enough nutrients for the
new daughter cells
o Duplication of organelles
Interphase
Interphase.
The cell grows larger, duplicates the organelles, and makes the molecular building blocks needed for the succeeding steps.
First Gap (G1)
Interphase.
DNA replication and duplication of centrosomes occur.
Synthesis phase
Interphase.
Cell grows continuously, fills up the loss of energy during the S phase, making more proteins, continuously duplicating the organelles, and completing the preparations for the mitotic phase.
Second Gap (G2)
o Duplication division
o Cytokinesis –division of the
cytoplasm producing two daughter cells.
Mitotic (M) Phase
Why do cells enter G0 phase?
Unfavorable environmental conditions
Waiting for signals to enter G1
Permanent state for some cells like nerve
and cardiac muscle cells.
How Long does the Whole Cell Cycle take?
24 hours
How Long does the ___ take?
a. G1 Phase
b. S Phase
c. G2 Phase
d. M Phase
a. 5 - 6 hours
b. 10 -12 hours
c. 4 - 6 hours
d. Greater than 1 hour
“ G” w as mistaken to be gaps because they were thought to be an _____ but it turns out to be the period for intense metabolic activity.
inactive phase
Cell Cycle Control System.
Activates or deactivates another protein by ____?___ them. It givesthe‘stop’ and‘go’ signal at the Gap 1 and Gap 2 checkpoints.
(?)phosphorylating
Cyclin - Dependent Kinases (CDK) complexes
Cell Cycle Control System.
Undergo a constant cycle of synthesis and degradation during cell division. An activating protein that binds to a kinase to form CDK complex
Cyclin
Cell Cycle Control System.
Responsible for suppressing tumors, repairs the damaged DNA, and trigger apoptosis if the damaged is beyond repair
p53
If First Gap (G1) ‘s environment is unfavorable:
o Delayed progress through G1
o Enter G0 ( specialized resting phase)
-Quiescent (dormant)
-Senescent (aging or deteriorating)
