What is a silo
A container or tower, often cylindrical in shape used for storage of silage, grain, powders, pellets or crops
What material are silos often made from?
Steel, aluminium, concrete or fibreglass
Oxygen limiting silos or control atmosphere silo are a greater risk to us because?
Increases the risk of back draught or explosion when involved in a fire
Under no circumstances should crews enter a working silo or work beneath the silo during…… ?

At ground level. Unless preplanning identifies a more suitable location

- Appoint a safety officer

If gas monitoring equipment indicates a safe atmosphere is present. Can a crew enter without BA?
Yes
But the atmosphere monitoring must be maintained.
What procedure must be implement for all personnel entering a silo?
Line rescue procedure.
It must be assumed that the contents in the silo will not support the weight of the person entering
A firefighter at a silo incident must be nominated and fully briefed to do what?
Prevent anyone from opening or turning back on the silo
What can be done to reduce build up of vapour or toxic or explosive dust?
Consider use of a fine spray
What could be the problem with using a TIC in a silo?
A TIC is not intrinsically safe and if there is any risk of explosion it should not be used.

During a fire situation, unless performing a live rescue.
