compartment firefighting Flashcards
what is the definition of a Firefighting Jet?
A firefighting jet is a jet carried by a BA team detailed to locate, approach and extinguish the fire.
It is also the jet carried by a BA team detailed to search compartments and to locate and rescue
casualties. min of 45mm and set at 230lpm
What is the second Firefighting jet used for
The principal purpose of the second firefighting jet is to protect access and egress from the compartment and should remain in place at all times while the initial BA team is committed inside.
This jet must be of an equal or greater capacity than the original firefighting jet it is supporting, and as a minimum must be comprised of a 45mm hoseline and branch set at 230lpm. It should be least one hose length longer than the firefighting
jet.
should a covering jet be directed directly in to an opening?
Not unless specifically instructed covering jets/sprays should not be directed into openings
A covering jet used outside should be directed onto a suitable surface above the compartment opening to cool the unburnt gasses and create a curtain of water over the opening.
Where possible a 360° survey of the premises should be conducted prior to any compartment firefighting. Why is this?
5
This is to gather information on; the possible life risk; extent of the fire; smoke behaviour; entry and exit points; and potential ventilation outlet
for main jets longer than 3 lengths of hose what should be done to reduce frictional loss?
the hose nearest the fire ground pump should be 70mm hose and the last to (nearest branch) should be 45mm to assist in movability
what would the most likely course of action if water supply was lost to a BA crew?
tactical withdrawal, emergency evacuation, fire fighter emergency
